Dale grew up in Savannah, Georgia. He majored in music at Armstrong State College (now Armstrong-Atlantic State University), and graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1976. He met his wife, Marlene, while in college. Dale became a Diaconal Minister of Music in the United Methodist Church, serving Dawson Church and Trinity Church, Savannah. Dale later attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University, graduating with a Masters of Divinty degree in 1986. He was ordained an Elder in 1988. Dale has served appointments in Howard, Dudley, Macon, Louisville, Lakeland, and Albany. He is a pastoral counselor who specializes in trauma work. He and Marlene have two children, both Yorkshire Terriers, named Cha-Cha and Tango.
